First Bump in the Road

I'm apparently more of a perfectionist than I thought. And I apparently have a bad habit of filming videos and then ditching them.

I got the part I needed in the mail a couple of days after posting my first blog post. I immediately went into my room to test out my theory. It was a good theory. Too bad it wouldn't use my camera on my phone to film, it would just film my screen. Not what I had in mind. So I would have to settle for using my laptop camera.

That's fine. As long as the audio is good quality, that's all that matters in ASMR, right? I thought so until I finally started to film.

It took me so much longer than I had expected to film my first video. When I finally got around to it, everything was a mess. Literally. My room was a disaster, because I was smack dab in the middle of moving my things from my dorm to my room at home. I have stuff for two rooms and only one room to fit it into. On top of that, now I have to find a clean looking space to sit down and record a video. I thought I found that space, but every few seconds, I was bumping into things and making more noise than required or desired in ASMR.

My makeshift recording studio was set up in front of my wooden closet doors. I put down a blanket so I had a decent background. I put my clarinet case and craft case on the back of my ottoman to mount my laptop. I had my microphone on the front of the ottoman. While I was filming, my legs were in an uncomfortable position and kept falling asleep. I wasn't flexible enough to get the angle I wanted. It was a disaster from beginning to end.

I just wasn't happy with how it was going. So I saved the video, and planned to edit it later. I never even got to the editing stage. I was so unhappy with how it looked, how I felt while filming, that I never looked at the video again.

I waited a while to redo the video. Every night I would wonder if this would be the night. Every night I found something to put it off. Until one morning, I was feeling very motivated. I put on makeup and a nice outfit (very unusual for me in quarantine haha), and by the time everyone in my family had gone to bed, I was ready.

This time, I filmed on my bed. I mounted my laptop up on one of my bed posts, put my ottoman and microphone in front of that on my bed, and sat on a pillow to prop myself up. I hit record, and it was like a whole new video, though the triggers were the same.

I hope you all enjoy this video. Is it the best ever ASMR video. No, not even close. I mean, beyond the video quality, I'm still learning. There are some triggers you can't hear very well, I'm having a hard time knowing where the frame is for visual triggers, and I need to sort out my whispering a bit I think. But I was happy doing it. I loved filming. That's all that matters, right?
